Styling Idea: Maps

One of our favourite ideas in the current issue was from Kristl and Chad’s beautiful wedding. Rather than having a registry, the couple asked guests to contribute to their European honeymoon, and with a touch of creative flair, they created a beautiful wishing well using an old suitcase filled with maps of Europe, stamps, a world globe, and binoculars. Guests then placed their cards and well wishes inside the open suitcase.

If you and your husband and are from different countries, met while traveling, or plan on traveling together after your wedding, maps and globes could be a key styling theme at your wedding.

You may remember this beautiful table from one of our recent What We Loved posts, which featured a globe as part of the centrepiece.

What were your favourite styling ideas from our Winter issue?

Avoiding the little dramas

Ever had an evening full of little dramas?

Last night our marketing coordinator Meg went out for dinner with her girlfriends, and had a few little dramas of her own – running (late) out the door she managed to cut her toe; entering the restaurant she snagged her pretty new dress and dropped a button, and when it was time to dine, she couldn’t find a bobby pin to tuck that annoying piece of hair out of way!

While you’re probably thinking Meg is a little clumsy (and you’d be right there), these things can happen to anyone, even on your wedding day, so it’s always best to be prepared! But nobody wants to lug around a giant “first aid” or “emergency” kit on their wedding day – they tend not to go so well with your beautiful gown…

Unless of course you have one of the super sweet bags from from Bridal Survival, which come stocked with everything you could need to banish those little dramas. Packed with tissues, headache tablets, bandaids, bobby pins, candy, mirror mints, cotton tips, emery board, makeup pads, wet wipe, and a sewing kit, you can have the problem sorted before anyone notices! If only Meg had been carrying the vintage-inspired “Claire” bag last night – it would have saved her from a few dramas (and matched her new dress perfectly!).

Preserving your gown

It can be one of your most significant expenses in the lead-up to your wedding, but you only wear your gorgeous gown once, so you’ll want to make sure you preserve it perfectly!

According to preservation experts, the best way to store precious fabrics is to lay them flat or gently folded, in an acid-free environment far away from light and heat. Wire hangers and clear dry cleaning or suit bags are a huge no-no! But you do want to keep the dress well sealed to ensure dust, grime and insects don’t work their way in and ruin your precious garment.

So, short of giving your dress over to a museum, what do you do? Well, we’ve found a nifty new product for you – called the That Special Moment box. Made from acid-free materials, the boxes have been scientifically proven to store fabric effectively. They come in five glossy colours (so you can match your box to your wedding theme), and are large enough to store even the most voluminous gowns, such as the beautiful Dovima gown from the Vera Wang Spring 2010 collection (below left).

But here’s the best bit: you can buy them online and have them delivered to your door – anywhere in the world! Plus, a percentage of all profits are donated to the International Breast Cancer Research Foundation, so you’ll be helping other brides out there live long, healthy lives!

Making everyone happy

Seven bridesmaids = 7 skin tones, 7 hair shades, 7 body shapes, 7 personalities… ingredients for drama.

Brides have so many big decisions to make in preparation for their wedding day, but one thing that is really important is making sure the special girls sharing this day with you feel gorgeous in themselves, while complementing your look.

Our Real Bride Ruth came up with the perfect solution. She chose the colour and fabric for her bridesmaids, with her only criteria being the length. She then gave a trusted dressmaker the task of working with each of her seven bridesmaids in designing their ideal dress. Their choice! The gorgeous result is below:
