Mariana Hardwick began her career in the 1970’s as proprietor of “The Garb Shop” in Toorak Road. It was the era of liberated women discovering their own sense of individuality and style. The demand was for alternative pieces, without compromising on quality and style. Mariana found her inspiration in vintage pieces from the Victorian and Edwardian periods through to the 1920’s. These eclectic garments offered a new interpretation of special occasion dressing. She created her collections in beautiful antique silks and laces, sourced from all over the world. The response was immediate, and in 1982 the MARIANA HARDWICK label was launched as the first contemporary bridal wear designer in the country.
