One of the coolest FREE art galleries I have ever been to. Huge fan of the giant red room of paintings. It was glorious. Really loved this place. The information desk gentleman was also so patient and competent. He suggested starting at the top floor with contemporary art and moving downstairs as things get more ancient. I was a huge fan of the queer artists feature they had at the top floor. There was an amazing dance video with shiny curtains and the whole choreography was played backwards symbolizing how regressive our society is. Although I do identify as queer, anyone can appreciate how empowering it is to bring to light the struggles and voices of queer artists. Anyways, my favorite floor was the European painting floor. THE SHEEP SURROUNDED BY CROWS. Brilliant. I love art.

Huge museum with lots to see. Free cloaking service at the entrance. Went for the Picasso exhibition. Simply amazing. There were some free exhibitions too on the upper floors. End up spending a good 3-4 hours here. The staff at the counter are really friendly and helpful.

Melbournes another Just Wow! Experience Wouldn't want any of a better experience. Great service wonderful artwork and the culture in this place is very strong. Great place to explore the 3 levels in the Gallery and amazing place for a day out with the fam. If you want to be able to see everything it isn't a 5 minute job so make sure you have plenty of time to come here. But would not expect nothing more. It's got a nice food place on the ground floor prices are average but still isn't cheap like some places. Got some great Photos while I was there.

I like it very much. The beautiful paintings and art of Australian artists are really spectacular. I enjoyed the environment very much. Highly recommended for those who like to get familiar with art of aboriginals and signs used in their crafts and paintings. The staff are friendly and helpful. You can get there easily by tram or trainenjoy it!

Excellent place and exhibition. You need more than one visit to see all.

Excellent museum and the fact that its free makes it even better.

Coming to a free museum I expected a rather short or unimpressive gallery, but, boy, how wrong was I. You can find there artifacts ranging from Neolithic Chinese vases to Jmon pottery (some of the oldest earth-ware producing civilizations), to Indian, Korean and the list goes on.

If you are more of a fan of contemporary exhibitions, the museum has you covered with a second floor section dedicated to different furniture styles from the 19th century. (Spoiler: there are many).

In terms of facilities, they have a nice cafe, shop and a free cloakroom.

All in all, I believe this museum is a must see by any art passionate who finds him/herself in Melbourne. Im attaching just a few photos as snippets since photos are also allowed inside.

The National Gallery of Victoria is hands down one of the most stunning art galleries we've ever been to. It's a treasure trove of art, spanning from ancient masterpieces to cutting-edge modern works. You'll find everything from breathtaking paintings to mesmerizing sculptures and even intricate jewelry. They really cater to all artistic tastes and preferences.

Now, let's talk about the Alexander McQueen exhibition. Wow! It left us completely amazed. Being big fans of his work, we were beyond impressed. It's a must-see for anyone who appreciates his incredible talent and innovation.

What's even better is that they offer free tours nearly every hour, if my memory serves me right. The guides are incredibly passionate about what they do, and their enthusiasm is contagious. They truly bring the art to life and make the whole experience even more memorable.

If you find yourself in Melbourne, you absolutely can't miss out on visiting the National Gallery of Victoria. No excuses. It's an art lover's paradise that you won't want to leave.

An excellent place to "travel" the world!

Wonderful time at the NGV going round the free exhibits and there are a lot of them! Excellent Coffee & cake at the Cafe. Great to be here.

The National Gallery is well worth the visit but be sure you have at least a couple of hours to walk around and admire. Open 10 - 5 every day, there are at least 3 levels to explore. The Gallery gives you the chance to respectfully view pieces of art that are of significant cultural and historical value. The skill of some of the older works is particularly breathtaking and masterful.

Absolutely beautiful artwork. Very friendly staff at the shop and even the security staff are pleasant.

Very well presented. We went on an overcast and wet day and it was very busy but even then there was still lots of room to walk around

The way the staff conduct themselves is so professional and admirable. We got treated with respect and understanding. The exhibitions were captivating. What we thought was going to be a few hours ending up being twice that enjoying the gallery and all it had to offer.

I visited the Rembrandt exhibit, which was interesting. The gallery is easy to get around. The free exhibits are better than expected. They have collections from everywhere and is quite balanced across styles. This makes it one of the more interesting galleries to visit. The Annie Smithers restaurant is quite good.

A fantastic place to take shelter & step into other worlds & other times.

The outdoor area at the rear was packed with happy kids splashing around in the pink water on a summers day.

We meandered through the galleries, from first century pottery to British & European works & then mid century to modern works.

went to the Alexander McQueen show. was amazing, seeing the different eras of his collection and his inspiration, especially the Greek and Turkish styles. Iconic art and clothing pieces. Love reading his story and journey at the exhibition. Great staff members.

Great free attraction to take the family or if youre just into some different art styles. The place is massive and youll find yourself wondering if youve been in that particular area before. Definitely worth a visit if youre into the art scene.

An amazing place for people of any age. I went to the current children's exhibition by Daniel Emma and although the lines were a little long for my 4 year old, he certainly had a blast immersing himself in the experience and participating in creating art himself. We navigated the expanse that is the NGV easily and appreciated the many escalators (and the elevator) to get from floor to floor. The outside pieces were phenomenal to experience in the flesh, particularly The Temple of Boom with its vibrant colours and intricate details. Highly recommend for an outing an day of the week, with or without kids! Oops, nearly forgot my son's absolute favourite part, the water wall at the entrance, was a favourite of mine at his age too.

Busy on the weekends (which is to be expected), but I always love visiting this gallery. Great works categorised into centuries and regions which make the experience easy to digest. Their paid exhibitions are always incredibly curated and are well worth it.

This place is a Melbourne institution - definitely worth a visit!

We were here for the winter masterpieces but we come down every other month. The paid exhibitions are great but the free stuff and other events are always worth while.

Great gift shop, good cafes and event spaces. Definitely worth a visit!

A CREATIVE AND INSIGHTFUL EXPERIENCE

NGV is an absolute must visit for tourists and locals alike - we came here for the Up Down and All Around exhibition which was mainly for kids but we as adults had heaps of fun. The sushi train exhibit is very life like and forces your creativity to turn everyday objects into furniture.

NGV have a myriad of other exhibits (some free and some paid) which are absolutely worth checking out.

Cant wait to come back to visit their other exhibits!

Its nice gallery. Can see arts from Asian to European region. And most important thing is its free of charge.

Brilliant national gallery, with lots of artifacts to see. Also free to enter, with concession tickets available for some exhibits.

Pierre Bonnard exhibition loved it

The water show at the gate at night (water running down glass doors) is nice.

This venue boasts an exquisite array of collections, featuring captivating artworks and sculptures from different culture that are visually enchanting. The added charm of a serene garden at the back provides a delightful spot for relaxation. One could easily spend a good couple of hours exploring all the treasures on display. I wholeheartedly endorse a visit with both family and friends to fully relish this enriching experience.

This place is kinda my one-year worth of viewing art collection. At first it was like a world tour because I got to see a glimpse of Japan, China, Korea, India and Thailand on one floor. Then on the other floors, I got to see a wide range of different art collections. It was a nice experience to see how this kind of artworks were preserved and appreciated over time.

One of my favourite places to visit regardless of your age or budget. There is something for everyone, and the stained glass ceiling is free for everyone to enjoy. The winter master exhibitions are a great draw card to attract visitors during the colder months and theres plenty of space to park and lock up your push bike. Visiting the gallery is a great day out for a solo explorer or a nice change for a family outing.

NGV Friday nights are excellent. A chance to walk the exhibit with a smaller crowd - drinks and nibbles are available, they're not cheap but it's part of the experience.

NGV is one of the reasons I live in Melbourne.

Nice place

We visited this gallery and enjoyed the art on display. There were many large classical paintings and numerous galleries. There are also some famous artists' works on display including Henri Mantisse and Andy Warhol. There are two cafes in the gallery for drinks and food. A very interesting place to spend a couple of hours.

NGV hosts diverse exhibitions, yet some displays lack engaging content, affecting the overall experience. The museum's layout can be confusing, and signage may require improvement. The entrance fees are reasonable, but the crowds during peak hours can be overwhelming. Despite these drawbacks, NGV stands as a decent cultural hub in Melbourne, catering to a wide range of artistic interests.

We were able to see works by famous artists like Picasso, Mucha, Dali, Warhol, Monet. Great collection even for ceramics and wood craft.

It was so big and exciting, I could only visit the first floor

A wonderful place to visit. Filled to the brim with amazing art in all its form. The building is amazing in itself. It is incredibly well presented. It is easy to stop to absorb or reflect on your surroundings and artwork, there is ample seating around to do this if required. I highly recommend a visit either general admission or for any exhibition event.

Perhaps Australia's premier gallery, only equalled by those in Australia 's Capital city Canberra. Collections of significant art, craft and collectibles. Australian galleries are a lifetime's treasured connection with the nation's history and culture. European masters always a draw card. Exquisitely curated and presented with a wonderful mix of reverence and at times cheeky fun. Panels and exhibits for children span the generations. After visiting the European caverns of art treasures, wondetful and exhausting as these art cathedrals are, our NGV is a breath of fresh air.

Enjoyed a birthday lunch with girlfriend in the Garden Restaurant. The food was delicious and the view, delightfully with butterflies dancing in the sunlight among the flowers. It was quiet, at a slower pace. The staff were attentive without being intrusive. A really lovely few hours.

National Gallery of Melbourne is a must visit place if you like artworks and sculptures from different cultures around the world. The building is amazing, well organised, and has ample seating areas. Many classical paintings and sculptures of famous artists are on display in multiple galleries. There are cafes inside the gallery for drinks and food and a serene garden at the back for relaxation. It is a wonderful place to spend a couple of hours within the city life.

I'm especially fond of the overall artistic atmosphere at the NGV. The museum is moderately sized, making it comfortable to explore without feeling exhausted. Moreover, all the exhibitions are very interesting, immersing visitors in a world of art, truly a delightful journey for the soul. After viewing each exhibit, I love to stroll in the garden behind it. It's definitely worth a visit during leisure time.

If you love art, you'll want to visit this place regularly. It's the place to be for any art enthusiast. Every few months there's new exhibitions and installations, both free and paid. The building itself is a marvel with huge fountains and a large waterfall wall at the front. The garden usually hosts a free major installation and is a beautiful space to relax in. Plenty of rooms and variety to observe, discuss and contemplate. Hope it continues to receive the funds that make a lot of it free to the public!

A lot of things to see here for any art taste. Access is free which makes it a must visit place when in Melbourne. The galleries are very well organized and very interesting. Because the access was free, I visited three times and each time I discovered new things. The proximity to Federation Square and other Melbourne attractions makes it so easy to find and explore.
Highly recommended place to visit!

Preview of NGV Triennial Exhibition was excellent. Some stunning artworks, imaginative, often thought provoking. Difficult to take in, in a short visit as there is so much to see.
I really loved the way in which many contemporary pieces have been incorporated amongst what would be perceived as traditional art pieces and yet 'fit' so effortlessly.
It speaks of wit, understanding and intelligence in the selection and placement of these new artworks, a marriage, if you like, of old & new.

A must see activity in Melbourne. The gallery is an incredible achievement in art, architecture, design, and joy inspiring. Their kids gallery changes all the time and is always fantastic. Boston dynamic robots, under the sea adventures, sustainability, interactive exhibits and most importantly thought provoking art for kids and adults. A banana taped to a wall! It has us chating all day. The stain glass roof room and the huge outdoor area and the waterfall windows.
This isn't even mentioning the massive and expansive exhibitions that run all year and change.
What a landmark. What an achievement.

This is a brilliant gallery. A good size. Not too big. Good combination of modern and classic art. Also art from around the world. Some great exhibits. Well worth a visit.

Interesting exhibition

Never a dull moment visiting this gallery. It is free and full of beautiful and/or interesting stuff. And it is very kids friendly

I didn't plan to go there, but stopped by by chance while passing by, and it was so worth it that I could say it was the best choice I made during my trip to Australia. It's free, but there are so many works that I watched them all in 2 hours. If you like watching at your leisure, it's okay to spend 3 hours. I haven't been to the National Gallery in Sydney, but after visiting here, I almost regret that I should have gone. The whole time I was here, I couldn't think of anything else and I loved the time I spent immersed in art. I am very satisfied and highly recommend it. Even people like me who are not particularly interested in art exhibitions should definitely go there at least once. You might be interested...

Nice place to visit with family and kids.

The artworks were spectacular and definetly worth the trip. So many different kinds of work, and heaps of exhibitions to see. We loved the gallery and would visit again. We really enjoyed it both the international and Australia NGV exhibitions. The only thing we didn't like were the tiny elevators!

A wonderful art gallery with multiple levels and from different periods. This is for the art aficionado who enjoys spending hours looking at and learning about all kinds of amazing art. Escalator and elevator access, along with a gift shop and a cafe. Great for all kinds of people but do stop by and have a look at all the beautiful art of the NGV. Theres a section for children on the Ground Floor which is lots of fun.

Amazing experience to see the diverse range of art on display

One of my favourite places to visit in Melbourne. If you love art, the Winter Masterpieces are not to be missed. The NGV is easily accessible via public transport. It's a short walk from Flinders St Station and along Swanston St/St Kilda tram route. If you have a bit more time and weather permits, hop across to Royal Botanic Gardens across the road and enjoy the park and fresh air.

Amazing gallery with different types of art for everyone to enjoy. The range of art displayed was great, including international pieces, free immersive artwork experiences and contemporary collections. Would recommend!

During the 2020 lock down, I researched my father's Aunt, I knew she was born in "Ukraine and a sculptor" the sister of his father, not much else. TOTALLY stunned to realise her facts? She went to Paris FRANCE to enroll in a Fashion Degree, then changed to " ARTS " 1920s Became well known and Awarded The "Legion of Honour" Over several decades I had found myself making ? things, that eventually became known as sculpture. A new word "ART"/ was something I knew nothing of, I'd had no training, yet was able to produce amazing results. The years passed, I trusted bad people in pursuit of my hunger to make art, totally disappointed, everything in storage...for more than 5 years now. Visited the Sth Melb. Market walked past a cheese shop, that bitey grab to my cheeks happened, asked which cheese would satisfy? Options -_-, the boss confirmed, he had a French accent, I had an overwhelming need to share my Great Aunts privilege so mentioned "The Legion of Honour" The beautiful man showed his surprise & delight, then mentioned , the French Government has a "ARTS" school for family members for recipients of the ,"Legion of Honour" ? DNA I guessed? My mind did back flips and giant leaps to think, 'there may be a studio there'. ? Within the hour, I went to the library, strangely the librarian was from Georgia? Tina, suggested I contact the French Embassy... Closed till next week. Next option to call The National Gallery of Victoria. Selected option 4 "the Lady" listened to why I was calling and found a link that opened another World of interactions to investigate. Feedback from those options has resulted in being sent literature about the Art School in France but it's all in French.? In the days passed I realised I would move all of my studio tools materials and sculptures in a blink, if there was a sizable studio for me to work and show my version of what "ART" is, as I've had NO luck finding somewhere here since the Pandemic. My reason to love NGV, as I'm holding onto a thread of hope.

Many things to see!!

Hands down one of the best museums around! Ive lived here for 14yrs and it never disappoints. Its definitely worth being a member so you can keep up to date with events and exhibitions especially previews.

Amazing! Its a combination between art from this century and art from some centuries ago, its just amazing, you can spend hours going around in the different sections. Staff is super polite and helpful I would visit this museum every day of my life if I could. Simply amazing.

It is one of the most interesting places in the city if you like art and culture. You never get bored visiting it because the exhibitions always change. You can also go to work, it is a quiet place and has Internet service. They have cloakroom service and their staff is attentive.

Came here for the last day of Triennial (well the live performance last day).
Was so lovely to hear live music playing in the foyer on arrival. Really nice acoustic sound in the wide open space.

Lots of interesting modern and famous art works on display. Lots of people out enjoying their Sunday afternoon basking in the wonderful works from both local and international collections.

One of Victorias major attractions - this wonderful art gallery centrally located, so getting there by transport was easy! It is wheelchair accessible and has toilets on each floor for convenience. The cloakroom was free of cost. There are several food stalls. While the prices may be slightly more costly than elsewhere, the gallery is situated near many places to eat. A great way to spend a weekend.

Came here for Triennial in the afternoon and it wasnt packed which is lovely as you can explore freely.

Amaze on how clean and easy to navigate each exhibition. Awesome show called Afrocentric and nice acoustic sound in the wide open space.

Amazing gallery. So much to experience. Easy to spend half a day there. A highlight of any visit to Melbourne, especially with the Triennial exhibition on until 7 April 2024.

Without question the best museum in Australia, and I've been to prestigious museums overseas that don't come close to the WOW factor of the NGV works & staging. We are very lucky to have it in Melbourne. A must visit for everyone.

Ever changing, national treasure of a museum. Free for all to admire and learn about art. Light channels all through the building gives you some great photography challenges. Cafe is expensive as expected, prepare to walk a lot.

Bags are easily stored away safely at front desk, hang on well to your bag card.

An absolutely memorable visit refreshed my mind and soul. I highly recommend a solo visit, as I did, for single people. It provides the opportunity to chat with others and share ideas. I will go back again as two hours aren't enough for watching the art piece.

Yes the lunch at Young and Jacksons City Pub then followed up with the self guided tour of the National Gallery of Melbourne!!!

Lovely art collection

Very interesting collection with a little bit of everything. For Australian's it is probably normal, but if you are not from here, it is highly unusual that entrance and cloak check are free. Easily accessible with public transportation, too.

National Gallery of Victoria is a fantastic place to visit for free for arts, ancient sculptures, scriptures, cultures, heritage, books and many more. It has beautiful collections of preservation of ancient arts and cultures. I visited with my partner here a month ago and even though we are not a big fan of art, we thoroughly enjoyed visiting this place.

Hey, this is a wonderful place. One of the best art galleries in Melbourne. there are a lot of art in it and there is a big garden in the backyard with sculptures. The most important thing is most of the exhibitions are in high standard and free.

First time visitor and thoroughly enjoyed the visit

NGV had a great exhibition when we visited on Good Friday. It was surprising the gallery opened during the long holiday and it was perfect for families with kids. The theme was Triennial- there were lots of artworks to enjoy. Some famous paintings were there! As always, kids enjoyed the kids section and there were plenty of spaces where we sat and rested.
The outdoor area was also great for enjoying sunny weather!

First visit since the dark times of COVID. Always interesting and engaging displays

The National Gallery of Victoria is well worth a visit. It has a capsule of all the important art, furniture and pottery. It does have a surreal element in that modern and old art are exhibited side by side. Free at the point of entrance. It's a lot to take in at one visit. I'd love to go back.
