10 Tips for putting on your wedding dress

Find out how to avoid ruining your hair and makeup with this quick guide to putting on your wedding dress

  • Before putting on your gown, go to the toilet. It may be the last time you get to go before the reception.

  • Have the bride and her bridesmaids wash their hands well, in case makeup is on the fingertips.

  • Top up your deodorant , ensuring there’s no white residue

  • Two people should assist in zipping. One person should be at the front, easing the dress back along the ribcage to make the zip go up easier, to avoid putting too much stress of the zip. If you are in a tightly bodiced gown, do up the zip a few inches at the base, have a bridesmaid push the fabric along the ribcage to assist the second bridesmaids in doing up the top button or hook and eye, and finally zip it all the way.

  • For a bodiced gown, you may have a small roll of skin that is hanging over the fabric at your back. To even out the skin, have a bridesmaid insert a finger between your back and the dress, running her finger from the  middle of your back around to your side.

  • Get your bridesmaids to help you put your shoes on.

  • Lift the skirt of the gown and smooth down any petticoat layers.

  • Make sure that your bridesmaids keep their lipstick away from the fabric.

  • Be sure to handle fabrics gently to avoid creasing.

  • Pack your zipper bag that your gown was supplied in into your overnight bag, so the morning after you can carry your gown and his suit home, rather than a garbage bag supplied from the hotel!
