Honeymoons at Lord Howe Island

Australia

If you're looking for the antithesis of the Gold Coast, then Lord Howe is your place in the sun. This stunning, pristine, world-heritage listed island restricts visitors to just 400 at any one time, while there are stringent controls on development and the main method of transport is bicycle or foot.

The resorts are primarily family run, low key and low impact, while operators running lagoon, walking, diving and snorkeling trips are also environmentally conscious. Everything on the island that can be recycled is. Visitors are asked to separate their garbage, while plastic bags are virtually non existent.

Today there is a level of luxury that wasn't there say 50 years ago, with resorts such as Arajilla Retreat, Earl's Anchorage and the newly refurbished Capella Lodge. Baillie Lodges has just completed a $1 million ‘glamover' to its much loved flagship property Capella Lodge, bringing it into line with its ‘big sister', the world-renowned Southern Ocean Lodge on Kangaroo Island.

Clever architectural designs honour the relaxed spirit of Lord Howe Island and capture the fantastic views of the soaring twin mountain peaks and turquoise lagoon. But aside from this Lord Howe is pretty much how it has always been.

Here you can find your own stretch of golden sand, dive on the most southern coral reef in the world, and see extraordinary plant and bird life. It has everything you could want in an island destination without the glitzy resorts and the crowds, while its unique natural beauty is recognised throughout the world.

National Geographic in fact described Lord Howe in 1935 as the most beautiful island in the Pacific - and it still lives up to the claim today.

Accommodation ranges from self-catering units to luxury lodges and must be booked before you leave the mainland.
